Whatcha reading?

I didn't put the rules website up tonight. Not like that's a crisis but I do enjoy keeping people informed.

Is anyone reading anything right now? Or has enjoyed something recently? I'm reading Letters from Yellowstone, an epistolic novel set in 1890-something about a botanist who scandalized the academics by showing up at the national park to partake in a study and being a LADY SCIENTIST! It's good stuff so far. I've never been to Yellowstone...someday...someday I shall go to that place of great renown.

I think I mentioned to somebody somewhere that I'm reading M.T. Anderson's The Game of Sunken Places. Sarah, you'd love it: it's dark, creepy, funny fantasy. And I've fallen that much more in love with Tobin. What is it with me and the dorky types?

Also reading Naked (Sedaris) to make me laugh before I go to bed and chase out the bogeymen brought on by Mr. Anderson. Just read the one about Grandma Ya Ya and nearly woke up my roommate with a guffaw at 1am...

Ack - Jo, I read The Game of Sunken Places over the summer and was disappointed! I think I didn't take into account that it is more of a middle reader as opposed to YA. I love Tobin, and am probably committed for life to buying all his stuff in hardcover, but I went in with expectations of too great a height.

See how I can make this my fault?

Gretna did have his Strange Mr. Satie picturebook. It was okay. I still want to read his book on Handel. I really enjoyed Burger Wuss and Thirsty.

OH! I read a short story (autobiographical) he had in a short story collection. Can't remember the title. But he wrote about how he was a total Anglophile and went to school in England because of how romantic (classic definition, not lovey dovey) it was, all steeped in History and whatnot. There was a photo of him from just after high school and he's wearing old Englishy clothes that he got by scouting out thrift stores. Three piece suit and all. Looks like the 1800s. I'll get the book at the library again - very interesting.

Sorry, Sarah. I thought The Game of Sunken Places was practically written by you! Alas, I was wrong.

So I've finished that book. Now I'm on to Lirael, the second of Garth Nix's crazy Abhorsen trilogy. (I'm on a fantasy kick. Wanna join in, Sus?) It's a little heavy already, so I'm balancing with Naked still.

Nice try, Jo. You get effort points for trying. Of course, those don't really count for much in the real world. But I still think highly of you.

I love the Abhorsen books, though the first book really is the best. I wish Nix wrote more of that sort; he's kinda stuck on series SF/F for younger readers, which does not interest me. Much. His website is worth looking at - scroll down to the essays at the bottom. Looks like he's got a short story collection coming out soon and it is set in the same universe as the Old Kingdom. Yay!

I used to have a crush on him - he responded to an email I wrote him back when he was getting started as an author - but then he got married. To someone else.

By gum, you're right. It's a worthwile website.

Sorry he didn't propose. To you. I'm still waiting on Tobin, you know. Although shouldn't I steer clear from guys with weird-ass names?
