Susan, this one's for you!

An interview with Jon Ican'tspellhisnameforthelifeofme.

Do we have a book discussion starting tomorrow? Yes! Have I read the book? NO! Did I, in fact, suggest the book? YES!

Yay for Jon, which in turn is a yay for Lane, since he's associated with Jon and he is my everlasting boyfriend dontchaknow.

Fascinating to think about how boys differ from girls. It's such a "no duh" point, but I agree with Jon (we're on a first-name basis) that we don't do much to address it. I wonder if, when I was a teacher, I subconsciously promoted "girl books" to the boys, being female myself. I did have comic books and magazines in my classroom for kids to read, but of course I can't remember what kind of stuff we read aloud as a class.

I've tried to beef up my collection of boys books (Rats Saw God, Walter Dean Myers stuff, Chris Crutcher stuff, etc.) in anticipation of my nephew thinking I'm cool and wanting to borrow books from me, but I think I've got a ways to go (he's 3). My boy cousins, whom I've desperately tried to get interested in reading (gave them Monster and Slot Machine recently), might be too far gone. They hate reading and can't really understand why anyone would do it for fun. And no matter what we try to tell them, they don't seem to buy it. Mike is a huge reader and tries to influence them (he is hopefully going to start a summer reading contest with the thirteen-year-old), but who knows what sinks in.

Why am I still talking?

Anyway, Meera, have no fear about Fortune's Bones. You can read it in one short sitting, depending on how long you let your mind soak up Marilyn's rhythms and words.

You should at least attempt to spell the name, since I read "Jon" and immediately implanted "Stewart" into my head, and then corrected myself and assumed it would be someone I didn't know, and I didn't click until I saw somewhere else that it was Jon Szieczeoidfgzka, the stinky cheese man.
