One quick comment - I found this book far too gimmicky. The puzzle in the illustrations has no real connexion to the story. Having to STOP and decode Calder and Tommy's letters interrupted the narrative flow.
And I know I could have gotten away without decoding the letters, using context, but then I MIGHT HAVE MISSED SOMETHING and I can't bear that.
